Surf Dogs is a hot dog joint in the Southside of Glasgow. Decorated with an eclectic mix of Star Wars memorabilia, skate boards and film quotes, it is an American Diner-style eatery in a quintessentially Glaswegian neighbourhood.

Surf Dogs dishes up a variety of hot dogs, most of which can be easily made vegan! All food and drink is American inspired - apart from hot dogs you can get chips & fries, onion rings or milkshakes, as well as a selection of American craft beers or cocktails.

I first visited Surf Dogs in early 2018, but recently went back to try the all new menu and taste a few different hotdogs. A place serving vegan hotdogs was definitely what the Southside crowds needed - the diner-style Surf Dogs provides a great hangover cure (imo much better than fried foods), a cool date spot or simply a warm and welcoming restaurant in the Shawlands neighbourhood.

While the menu isn't fully vegan, the owner Martin Capaldi seems to put a lot of emphasis on being able to provide vegan options to his customers, that are equally as exciting as the non-vegan hotdogs. Surf Dogs is located right next to Soy Division - so if you ask me, that vegan-friendly attitude doesn't surprise me at all!

So far I've tried the Super Rad Vegan Dog, which is simple but tasty, the BBQ Dog, the Philly Dog (pictured below on the right) and the Margerita Cane. The vegan sausages have a great texture and are very satisfying to bite into. While I love a hotdog with caramelised onion, I have to say that the Margerita Cane with the rich Italian tomato sauce and melted mozzarella is by far my favourite!

Labelling:

Vegan options and items with vegan alternatives are clearly labelled. Any hotdog with a cheese topping can be prepared with a vegan cheese alternative, just ask your waiter about it.

Vegan Options:

Super Rad Vegan Dog: with caramelised onions - vegan by default
BBQ Dog:
with onion rings and ‘Jack n Coke’ BBQ sauce - order with vegan hot dog
Kimchi Rad-ish: with kimchi and Korean hot sauce - order with vegan hot dog
Philly Dog: with caramelised onions and melted monterey jack cheez - order with vegan hot dog
Margarita Cane: with rich Italian sugo and mozzarella - order with vegan hot dog
Frasier Crane: with creamed cheese and caramelised onions - order with vegan hot dog

Budget: The vegan Super-Rad Surf Dog is a real steal - only £4.50 for the hotdog and a side of fries for £3. That will fill you up good! Other hot dogs are between £4 and £7; you can add toppings for £2 and order sides from £2.50.

PS: Surf Dogs also delivers!!!
