January 8, 2018 Comment 0 Soy Division [CLOSED] *** Please note, that this restaurant is unfortunately closed. *** Soy Division is a small vegan cafe in the Southside of Glasgow, that would not only win the award for best vegan name in my books, but also serves up delicious vegan breakfast and lunch fare. It might be a little out of the way, especially if you're not a Southside local, but owner Debbie's homemade food is really worth the trek! On the menu you'll find a variety of cooked breakfast items, rolls and sandwiches, but in the deli counter there are also other homemade dishes to choose from, such as lasagne, quiche or cakes - depending on what's freshly out of the kitchen. Soy Division is the brainchild and passion project of Debbie Mcculloch and aside from providing her local Shawlands community with a vegan breakfast and lunch option, she also created a warm and welcoming space within the four walls of the cafe. When I first visited Soy Division, Debbie took a bit of time to tell me stories about the early days of the cafe, which opened in 2016. My favourite anecdote was about an elderly lady, who came in desperately seeking for a bacon roll. Unaware that she had just entered a fully vegan cafe, Debbie explained to the lady that they do serve bacon rolls, only that they are absolutely meat-free. She tried it anyways and Debbie told me, that before she left, the woman came up to the counter and said to her, that she would not have been able to tell the difference and she really enjoyed the vegan bacon roll! The cafe has an unpretentious minimalistic menu, offering pretty much the same as you'd except from a typical Glasgow greasy spoon - showing that in order to enjoy traditional Scottish breakfast items like square sausage or a bacon roll you don't have to consume meat. Other items on the menu include a full cooked breakfast, toast with butter or homemade peanut butter, and my favourite item, French toast, which you can order with maple syrup, fresh fruit and/or vegan bacon. In the deli counter you'll find more options that change regularly, such as lasagne, burger patties, sandwiches, salads, quiches, cakes, cookies and so on. Budget: Soy Division is a real steal! The full breakfast is only £7, sandwiches are £6.95, rolls are between £1 and £3 and the French toast is £4.5- to £6.50 depending on your toppings. There are only a few tables in the cafe and I really recommend coming down early during the weekend. It has happened a few times that we came in first, and then within 5-10 minutes all the other tables filled up as well leaving no more space for late arrivals. Soy Division currently does not have customer toilets, but customers are welcome to use the facilities in neighbouring cafes.
