March 31, 2018 Comment 0 Romans Pizzeria Romas Pizzeria is a new pizza joint in the Merchant City, in the city centre of Glasgow. The menu is simple, but the results are grand! There are only 10 pizzas to choose from, plus a couple of side orders and of course a fully licensed bar. From the 10 options, one pizza is vegan to begin with, but the two vegetarian pizzas can be prepared with vegan cheese on request, giving you a total choice of three pizzas. But what's on them and how do they taste? Find out below! I was invited along to the restaurant launch of Romans Pizzeria which was hosted in March 2018. What first sprung to my eye is that there had obviously been a lot time and effort invested in creating the menu. Even though there are only 10 pizzas to choose from, a lot of creativity has gone into the combinations of toppings on offer. The launch event was served buffet style, so we could grab slices of whatever we want, but usually the restaurant has table service, like anywhere else. The first pizza we got our hands on was the vegan pizza - number 5. It is topped with vegan mozzarella, mushrooms, onions, smoked vegan chicken, rocket, cherry tomatoes and sliced gherkins. The combination was an absolute winner, and the chicken was shredded into tiny pieces, so that you could barely see it - but certainly taste it! We then ordered both of the vegetarian pizzas with vegan cheese, because we wanted to know what they're like. Number 1 is an Italian classic and probably the most minimalistic pizza on the menu. It is served with sun blushed tomatoes, mozzarella, drizzled with garlic olive oil and fresh basil. The other one, number 9, sounded much more adventurous: blue cheese, mozzarella, cauliflower cous cous, mushrooms, rosemary, smoked beetroot and served with a balsamic glaze. The vegan version comes with vegan mozzarella, but no blue cheese. All pizzas at Romans Pizzeria are prepared with high quality Caputo flour and the tomatoes are sourced from Campania in Italy. The dough is fluffy and the tomato sauce really rich, making every bite a delight. I can barely pick a favourite from the three vegan pizzas we tried, but really loved the creativity of toppings on number 5 and 9! Labelling: The vegan pizza is clearly labelled "(VG)". The pizza bases are all vegan even though the menu does not explicitly say so. If you'd like to order one of the vegetarian pizzas with vegan cheese, you have to discuss this with your waiter. Vegan Options: No 1 (I) - if ordered with vegan cheese: sun blushed tomatoes, mozzarella, drizzled with garlic olive oil and fresh basil. No 5 (V): vegan mozzarella, mushrooms, onions, smoked vegan chicken, topped with rocket, cherry tomatoes and sliced gherkins. No 9 (IX) - if ordered with vegan cheese: blue cheese, mozzarella, cauliflower cous cous, mushrooms, rosemary, smoked beetroot and served with a balsamic glaze. Budget: The prices at Romans Pizzeria start very budget-friendly at £7 for No 1, but even the more creative creations don't cost more than £8.50!
