January 22, 2018 Comment 0 Ranjit’s Kitchen Ranjit's Kitchen is a family-run vegetarian restaurant serving Panjabi food in the Southside of Glasgow. The menu is simple and minimalistic, offering only what you would find in a traditional Panjabi household on a daily basis. Serving things like paneer and homemade yogurt, the restaurant is not fully vegan, but there are usually plenty of options to choose from. We have been to Ranjit's Kitchen on numerous occasions, and never had a problem with getting a vegan daal and/or sabji. Once the daily option was not vegan, but the one for the next day was already done, so we simply got that. At Ranjit's Kitchen your get the real deal - authentic Indian cuisine from Panjab - prepared by Ranjit Kaur, a Sikh woman who has lived in the UK since the early 1980s. The food is exactly what you'd find when traveling to a Panjabi village; not westernised at all, and quite spicy at times! Together with her children Ranjit turned her lifelong dream of her own Panjabi restaurant into reality, and the local community of Pollokshields is happy to cue (almost) around the corner for a taste of her food. Vegan options: You should able to order the daal of the day and the sabji of the day, if they're vegan (which they often are). Other vegan options include pakora, samosas, paranthas, aloo tikki, vegetable rolls and roti bread. The only things you definitely can't have are the paneer dishes and the homemade yogurt. Labelling: Vegan options are not labelled, so it's best to talk to the staff who can tell you exactly which dishes are vegan or can be prepared vegan. Budget: Ranjit's Kitchen is a real steal - individual dishes are between £4 and £5, and the Panjabi thali, which easily feeds two people, is £8.45. You can't book a table at Ranjit's Kitchen, which is why we often opt for takeaway when it's too busy to wait for a seat. The dishes are the same, but the portions vary (small or large) - and if you go for large pots of daal and sabji, two of you can easily fill up a couple of times. It's also great for a vegan party buffet, when you're too busy to cook! When we sit in, we always order way too much, but take the rest home with us. The Panjabi Thali is a great spread of the top dishes, a tray with a bowl of the daal of the day, sabji of the day, homemade natural yoghurt, fresh salad, two rotis, pickle and chutney - just order it without the yogurt to make it vegan.
