In Bloom

Polly's Ploughman sandwich at In Bloom Glasgow - all sandwiches are names after Nirvana songs!

In Bloom is a small vegan cafe nearby St George's Cross, strategically located between and in walking distance from both, the West End and the city centre. The Nirvana-themed cafe serves up a variety of sandwiches, wraps and toasties, which are all 100% vegan.

All dishes are at least partially named after Nirvana songs, which makes it such a joy to browse the menu and choose your meal according to your favourite tune.

Since the cafe is very small, it is particular popular for takeaway, but if you're lucky you might even score the wee table by the big window, or a spot on the counter!

In Bloom had been on my foodie bucket list for ages, but somehow I never managed to get a table before. This time round I managed to get in just before the lunch rush and scored the cosy corner table by the big window.

There are only a few items on the menu, but they are all vegan, meaning that you can order without having to double-check ingredients with the staff - that's always a winner. I went for Polly's Ploughman (because I love Nirvana's Polly), while my friend followed the staff's personal recommendation of the Big Cheese Steak double-decker sandwich. Other options on the menu include Haggis & Cheese toastie, BLT, Doner Kebab wrap, Club Sandwich and soup.

Because the cafe got super busy all of a sudden, we had to wait a wee bit for our sandwiches to arrive, and our drink order was forgotten - but we had time, so didn't mind at all. The sandwiches were definitely worth the wait! They came cut in half, so it's easy enough to order two different ones and go halfers with another person. My Ploughman had lots of fresh salad in it, as well as dijon mayo and pickles, which gave it a tangy edge. The Cheese Steak sandwich was a little less healthy - with lots of cheese and Seitan steak - but so satisfying to bite into.

Still a little peckish after the main meal, we asked again for our drinks - got delicious caramel chai lattes - and ordered a few desserts; a strawberry Danish and a toasted croissant with butter. After all that I was properly full, but not uncomfortably stuffed!

Budget: In Bloom is a real steal! The Big Cheese Steak double decker is the most expensive dish on the menu at £7.95, while the Ploughman was just £4.50. Sandwiches for takeaway from the fridge are just £4. All in all, I spent less than £10 for a sandwich, a huge croissant and a hot drink.
